Medicare Frequently Asked Questions

You can first enroll in Medicare during your 7-month Initial Enrollment Period, which begins 3 months before the month you turn 65, includes your birthday month, and ends 3 months after. There's also an Annual Election Period from October 15 to December 7 each year, and Special Enrollment Periods for those who qualify due to specific circumstances.

Medicare Advantage (Part C) is an all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare offered by private companies. These bundles include Part A, Part B, and usually Part D. Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policies are additional insurance policies that help pay Original Medicare out-of-pocket costs like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. You cannot have both a Medicare Advantage plan and a Medigap policy at the same time.

Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) does not cover most prescription drugs you take at home. For prescription drug coverage, you need to enroll in a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (Part D) or a Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C) that includes prescription drug coverage. These plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare.

With Original Medicare, you can see any doctor who accepts Medicare assignment nationwide. With Medicare Advantage plans, you typically need to use doctors within the plan's network, though many plans offer out-of-network coverage at higher costs. We recommend checking with your providers before selecting a plan to ensure they accept your Medicare coverage.
